Der Schoß Abrahams spielt auf "Das Gleichnis vom reichen Mann und vom armen Lazarus" an; eine biblische Erzählung aus dem neuen Testament. (siehe Lukas 16,19-31 (GNB)) Auf den Schoß eines Großvaters (sinnbildlich für den Stammvater Abrahams) dürfen eigentlich nur Kinder. Und dann sind es meist die Enkel und die nahe Verwandtschaft, die ein inniges Vertrauensverhältnis genießen. So drückt das Lied den tiefen Wunsch aus, ein solches Gottvertrauen auch selbst zu erleben.

Es gibt kaum einen Gospel-Chor, der nicht dieses Lied im Repertoire hätte. Der Text ist so leicht, dass er unmittelbar vom Publikum mitgesungen werden kann. Dieser Gospel wurde sehr gerne gecovert. Um nur einige zu nennen: Golden Gate Quartet (1938), Les Humphries Singers, Peter, Paul & Mary, Louis Armstrong , Nana Mouskouri, Elvis Presley u.v.a.m.
