Ein Pattern ist nur ein Muster, wie Töne angeordnet sind. Wie wir noch sehen werden, besagt der Ausdruck "Major" nicht, dass es sich um eine Durtonleiter handelt. Es besagt nur, dass sich dieses Pattern von einer Dur-Tonleiter ableitet. Du kannst das gleiche Pattern auch für eine Molltonleiter nutzen.

Wenn du solch einen Fingersatz siehst, musst du dich zuerst einmal orientieren.

Im jedem Pentatonic-Pattern des CAGED-Systems stecken je ein Dur- und ein Moll-Pentatonik-Pattern des CAGED-Systems. Die Töne der Dur- und Moll-Akkorde werden als Arpeggio hervorgehoben. Achte einmal besonders darauf, wo zwei Akkordtöne auf einer Saite vorkommen. Will man diese als Arpeggio (harfenartig bzw. Akkordbrechung) spielen ergeben sich kaum Probleme. Will man diese als Akkord spielen, so lassen sich diese Töne nicht gleichzeitig spielen. Entweder geht man dort Kompromisse ein, oder man muss die CAGED-Lage verlassen, und schauen,vob man in der Nachbarschaft einen geeigneteren Fingersatz findet.

Die Akkorde innerhalb des C-Dur-Pattern lassen sich leicht von den Grundakkorden F, C, G, Dm, Am, und Em ableiten, fast so als würde man ein Capo benutzen. Jeder Akkord lässt sich greifen, doch einige sind regelrechte Fingerbrecher.
