Das Lied wurde 1927 in "Minstrelsy of Maine" von Eckstorm und Smyth unter dem Titel "Church and Chapel" erwähnt. Die heutige Fassung wurde jedoch stark von Stan Hugills Version (1989) beeinflusst.

Das Shanty erzählt von einem Leben auf See und enthält Referenzen zu Orten wie Backalieu Island vor der Küste Neufundlands. Einzelne Textstellen können Versatzstücke aus anderen Quellen sein, ähnlich wie es auch oft beim Blues vorgekommen ist.

Harmonielehre

Dem Lied fehlt der Ton B oder Bb^[1], welcher darüber entscheidet, ob die Tonart natürliches D-Moll oder D-Dorisch ist. Auch in der Akkordbegleitung kommt weder B noch Bb vor. Die Tonleiter hat sechs Töne und wird demnach hexatonisch genannt. Einen Ton weniger, und es wäre pentatonisch (5 Töne). Einen Ton mehr, und es wäre heptatonisch (7 Töne).
