Die Weavers erreichten mit einer Aufnahme dieses Songs 1951 die Spitze der amerikanischen Pop-Charts. Old Smoky könnte vermutlich einer der höheren Berge in den Ozarks oder den zentralen Appalachen sein, denn das Lied trägt die stilistischen Merkmale schottischer und irischer Siedler dieser Region. Welcher Berg jedoch genau gemeint war, bleibt unklar.
